The following morning Conway tweeted that she meant to say "Bowling Green terrorists" and that her earlier wording was an "honest mistake".[14] The clip of her talking about the Bowling Green Masscre went viral online.[5] Her claim has been ridiculed on Twitter and other platforms with people creating fake tributes.[2] The Washington Post wrote that "Conway has taken 'alternative facts' to a new level.[11] The Atlantic wrote that her "false statement stands out because it is simultaneously inaccurate and has the potential to be extremely inflammatory."[4] Brian Stelter on CNN criticized the Trump administration for "hammering" the media for mistakes, but going easy on Conway's error.[15]
British journalist, Marina Hyde, wrote a column in the Guardian criticizing the Trump administration for creating a fictional massacre when it was silent on the Quebec mosque shooting.[16]
